How big are the classes?

We limit beginners classes to 25 people but quite often there are fewer than this.  For workshops, the whole studio is used so we can accomodate larger numbers but depending on the nature of each workshop these vary.  Generally our off peak classes are smaller.

Do we have to chant?

It is part of the tradition to chant in yoga but we have found that most of our students prefer not to so we don't make it part of the class.  In Mysore sessions you are welcome to chant if you usually do so as part of your practice.  In some of the weekend workshops it may also be included.

Although gym classes do vary, in general they are short classes that focus simply on the physical side of yoga.  At Union, the classes allow more time to expore the practice properly, particularly with the Mysore sessions where you get one to one help.

What is the difference between yoga and pilates?

Physically, yoga and pilates are similar.  They both work on core strength and include lots of stretching.  However, yoga involves the mind much more and includes meditation and breathing exercises.  You are more likely to get that feeling of calmness and wellbeing after a yoga class than from a pilates class.

Can I bring water to class?

Yes, you can bring water along.  Some people find it best to drink before and after the practice rather than during but it is good to have it as you can sweat a lot during the class.

Should I eat before class?

It is best not to eat a large meal within 3 hours of a class but a small snack like a banana an hour beforehand may help if you need some energy.  It is also best to drink water steadily throughout the day rather than a large quantity just before the practice.

How long will it take to become flexible?

This will depend on many things; how fit you are already, how naturally flexible you are, how often you practice and how long you practice for.  With regular practice though, flexibility will come.  Most people find that there are certain postures that are easy, and others that will always be harder depending on how they are made.
